There’s a saying in the beauty community that with the eyeliner, you have to act cool, calm and collected. Why? Because it can sense your fear! How can one little pencil be so hard to work with? It doesn’t matter if you’ve just started playing with makeup or if you’re a professional makeup artist, we can all relate to the woes of eyeliner. That’s why it’s important to have a few tricks up your sleeve when it comes to applying it. These eyeliner hacks are perfect for makeup beginners who are looking for ways in which to make the task a little easier, but they can definitely be applied to anyone who loves wearing eyeliner too.
If your eyeliner is prone to smudging throughout the day, try out this tip. Layer your eyeliner with an eyeshadow that matches it to set it. Using a small angled brush or a small liner brush, simply go over your liner with a matching eyeshadow. It not only holds the eyeliner in place, but also makes the color pop and look more defined due to the additional layer of pigmentation. You can also do this with a gel eyeliner or a liquid liner. If you’re layering an eyeshadow on top of a liquid liner, just make sure it’s dry first before you begin.
Applying a white or beige eyeliner to the waterline is a great eyeliner hack for those who need a little cosmetic caffeine.
Tightline the bottom lash line with white or beige liner to open up your eyes and make yourself look more awake. Tightlining is when you apply eyeliner to the roots of your lashes (on the tip of the lid, basically on the underside of it). The great thing about this hack is that it’s so subtle, no one will know that you did it! However, the difference is so significant, you’ll be wondering why you didn’t try it sooner!
White eyeliner applied to the entire lid area is also great for making an eyeshadow pop and look brighter on the eyes. To do this, simply fill in the entire lid with a white liner (on the creamy side) and go over it with your shadow of choice. You’ll notice that the shadow becomes significantly more pigmented-looking on your eyes then it does without the white liner.
There are plenty of great makeup hacks for fixing eyeliner mistakes and when time is of the essence, it’ these little tricks that can make the difference between perfect eyeliner and another eyeliner tragedy. If you have shaky hands, suffer from hand tremors or end up adding more color than you would like, correct any unwanted color or uneven lines by using a skin-colored eyeliner pencil to even it out. It’s basically a magic eraser for your eyes! Another mistake-fixer that works in basically the same way is to use either a foundation or a concealer. To use, simply dip a Q-tip in the foundation and go over any of the places where you’ve applied too much eyeliner. For concealer go over the area where liner needs to be cleaned up around the eyes and blend with a concealer brush or fingers.
Eyeliner crumbles are the worst, right? To prevent having crumbly liner all day, before applying your makeup, stick your eyeliner in the freezer for 10 minutes. The cold air helps the liner to regain it’s shape again.
If you’re new to eyeliner, using liquid liner can be stressful as you don’t have as much control over the liner as you do when using a pencil. However, you can get the same intensity in a pencil liner as you do with a liquid by heating it up. Before applying your liner, use a lighter to heat up the pencil tip for a few seconds. Wait until it cools down for a few seconds and then apply. You will find that the texture is super creamy, but the pencil still holds it’s shape. The color is also intensified, taking on more of the look of a gel eyeliner.
For some beginners, it can be hard to draw a straight line across the eyelid without messing up. To make it easier, simply create dashes along the lashline where you want to apply your eyeliner. Then, go back and connect the dashes! Creating small lines instead of one continuous long one is much easier to do because you’re only working on one area at a time. To prevent your eyeliner from getting too thick make sure your dashes are the same width that you want your final eyeliner look to be. If needed you can always refer back to Eyeliner Hacks #3 for clean up around the liner.
Guess what? You don’t even need an eyeliner for this hack! Creating your own eyeliner is super easy and all you need is an eyeshadow and an eyeliner brush. Using a small eyeliner brush, wet it and get rid of any excess water, so it’s slightly damp. Next, dip the brush into an eyeshadow of your choice that you think will look awesome as an eyeliner and apply as you normally would apply your eyeliner. Make sure to run the brush along the lashline to prevent any lid from showing and prepare to be amazed.
Who says it’s not okay to have a little help when applying eye makeup or eyeliner? The end result is for the makeup to look good, right? One way to apply perfect eyeliner that you may not even be aware of is to use an eyeliner stencil. Eyeliner Stencils are great for all eye shapes and sizes because you can position it however you would like and create the desired shape. For the best results when using an eyeliner stencil make sure to fill in the shape with an eyeshadow first before setting or going after the shadow with a liquid or gel liner.
